Reissue, knockoff, authorized version - what do these terms mean? People often ask us questions about our units using these terms.

If you (or your parents) had bought a Herman Miller Eames storage unit in the 1950's or you have considerable quantities of money and have bought a unit at an auction house, you have an authentic Eames storage unit. All sources for units today sell items which are pretty much the same. A Modern Wood Works storage unit is not exactly like an original unit, similar but not exact. Other units on the market are similar, too. However, none are exact.

The wood on an original has a golden color developed from years of exposure to sun light. A Modern Wood Works' unit will develop a patina with time (unlike some vendors who coat their units with a yellow tint to fake a patina). Current wood finishes are different than finishes available fifty years ago. Birch plywood is different, also. Not bad, not wrong - just different.

From across a room an expert would have a difficult time telling a Modern Wood Works' unit from a 1950s original. Dimensionally our units are the same as an original. The diameter of the x-braces and the thickness of the structural uprights are the same. Our units are different concerning items such as the use of modern drawer glides. It is not our goal to make units that can be passed off as originals.

Modern Wood Works sells furniture made to a very high standard and based on the designs of Charles and Ray Eames (the original designer(s) of the furniture after which Modern Wood Works patterned or reproduced its own furniture). Our units serve their intended purpose: good furniture at reasonable prices based on a classic design.
